Born in Mallorqua, Spain, in 1992, Marcella Barceló now lives and works in Paris. She graduated from the Beaux-Arts school of Paris in 2015.
Marcella Barceló’s artistic universe is a mesmerizing blend of cultural references and personal memories. Her works, imbued with profound sensitivity, illustrate her unique ability to merge diverse influences, from Ghanaian movie posters to Japanese erotic and slasher cinema, to create a distinctive and captivating visual language.
Barceló draws inspiration from the subtle nuances of Japanese haiku and ukiyo-e, exploring the beauty of the ephemeral and the transient nature of existence. She is fascinated by the idea of a suspended world, an ‘ukiyo’ or floating world, where reality and dream intertwine, creating scenes that are both mysterious and captivating.
At the heart of her work is the figure of the adolescent, a recurring subject reflecting her literary and artistic influences such as Balthus, Lewis Carroll, Vladimir Nabokov, or Laura Kasischke. Barceló delves into this period of metamorphosis, capturing the complex emotions of adolescence with poignant precision through awkward poses and expressions of ennui. She aspires to depict the intimacy of an adolescent thought, like a gaze fixed on the classroom clock, eagerly awaiting the bell.
Each of Barceló’s paintings is a fragment of her personal diary, a reminiscence of her childhood spent on the island of Majorca. The outdoor scenes she paints are imbued with memories of her hot summers, the scent of picked flowers wilting under the scorching sun. These autobiographical elements add an additional layer of depth and authenticity to her work.
Through her art, Marcella Barceló invites the viewer on an introspective journey, where each piece is a window into her experiences, dreams, and intimate reflections. Her unique talent for capturing the fleeting essence of life, with all its nuances and contradictions, makes her art a rich and memorable visual experience.
