BIOGRAPHY
Ugo Sébastião was born in 1998 in Lyon, where he currently lives and works. After studying design, he graduated from HEAR in 2019 and ENSBA Lyon in 2023.
He was recently resident at the Palazzo Monti (Brescia, IT) and at the Artist in Residency (AIR) Program (Bad Ischl AT). He has also taken part in several exhibitions, including a solo show in Paris (Galerie Pal Project), a group show in London (Galerie Alice Amati), and more recently Artissima
in Torino (IT).
His mainly pictorial work exhibits a hybridization between figures and techniques from the history of Western painting, particularly from the Baroque period, and a contemporary approach to materials and subjects. Between filiation and rupture, this tension questions our ways of looking. Exposed on the surface of the painting, the material gives a glimpse of screen-figures, a play of the gaze between exposure and concealment. The classical subject becomes a support and the support a subject.
